Understanding Concrete Masonry Units for Florida Construction
Concrete masonry units, often shortened to CMU, are building blocks used in wall assemblies. Choosing the right unit starts with the project drawings and the intended role of the finished wall.

Start with the wall, then select the unit
A wall may be designed to carry loads, divide spaces or form part of an outdoor structure. Those roles do not make every block interchangeable. The designer’s specification should identify the unit, mortar, grout and reinforcement required for the particular assembly.
Universal’s concrete masonry blocks collection includes regular, half, bond beam, conduit and header units. Their different shapes support different details in a masonry layout. Match the product to the specified detail rather than selecting by appearance alone.
Understand nominal dimensions
Nominal descriptions do not establish exact outer dimensions. The published concrete block size table lists actual dimensions from Universal’s current product drawings. Use the drawing for the selected unit and the project’s masonry layout when checking fit.
Review the CMU specification guide alongside your material schedule. A catalog drawing helps identify a product but does not establish a wall’s strength or fire rating.
Plan for the project conditions
Florida projects may involve moisture exposure, wind design and variable ground conditions. Ask the qualified designer and installer to address drainage, waterproofing where required, reinforcement and connections for the site. A general article cannot confirm suitability for a particular structure.
Prepare a clear material request
Share the specified unit types, quantities, delivery location and timing with Universal. Ask which product documents are available and confirm stock before scheduling work. Do not assume a photograph establishes finish or current availability.
Contractors can also explore Universal Pro for the account application process. Account access is subject to review; project engineering and installation remain the responsibility of the professionals engaged for the work.
