Let the route guide the selection

Consider where the path begins and ends, how frequently it will be used and the transitions to other surfaces. Keep the route practical around gates, seating and planted areas.

Compare natural stone samples for variation and finish. Ask which sizes are available for the intended layout, rather than assuming every stone can be supplied in any pattern.

Plan water movement and footing

Shade, irrigation, leaves and rain can change the conditions along a garden path. Ask the installer to plan drainage and a stable, even surface suitable for the people using it.

Natural stone is not automatically a permeable pavement system. Joint material, base construction, soil and drainage design all matter. Nor should every stone finish be described as slip-proof or cool underfoot.

Make environmental questions specific

A natural origin alone does not establish a lower environmental impact. Quarrying, processing, transport and the life of the installation all need consideration. Ask for product-specific evidence if environmental performance is part of the brief.

Choose compatible maintenance

Remove loose debris and use cleaning methods appropriate for the selected stone. Ask about any sealer recommendation and avoid treating a general cleaning tip as suitable for all stone finishes.
