Shellstone Pool Decks in Florida: Pros, Cons, Care & How It Compares to Travertine
Shellstone is a porous limestone with visible shell and fossil fragments, and it’s a natural fit for a Florida pool deck. Florida pool builders praise it for feeling comfortable underfoot and for its natural traction when wet, but it’s a softer stone than travertine, so the edges need full support and the surface needs regular sealing. Choose shellstone for coastal character, or travertine if you want more consistency.

What shellstone is
Shellstone is a natural limestone, and ours comes from the coastal regions of Turkey. Look closely and you’ll see bits of shell and fossil in the surface, which is where the name comes from. That texture gives it a relaxed, beachy look that suits Florida homes.
Here’s what to know about the shellstone Universal Hardscapes carries: it’s a white blend with visible shell, with a tumbled finish, offered in a French Pattern and in 6 × 12, 12 × 24, 16 × 16, 16 × 24, and 24 × 24 inch formats, for pool decks, patios, and walkways. Because every piece varies, we recommend looking at physical samples.

Is shellstone good for a pool deck?
For many Florida homeowners, yes. It has real strengths around the pool, along with a few trade-offs you should know up front.
Pros of a shellstone pool deck
Comfortable underfoot
Does shellstone stay cool?
It stays more comfortable than many materials, but no stone stays cool in full Florida sun. Florida pool builders describe shellstone as comfortable to walk on and credit its light color and porous surface. Keep in mind that how any deck feels depends on the color, the finish, and how much direct sun it gets. The best test is your own hand or bare feet on a sample at one of our showrooms. Natural traction when wet
Is shellstone slippery?
Shellstone has a naturally rough, textured surface. Traction depends on the exact finish, sealer, maintenance, and site conditions; compare physical samples and discuss wet-area suitability with your installer. No stone makes a wet deck risk-free, so treat any pool deck with care when it’s wet.
Coastal look, and every piece is different
Because it’s natural stone, no two pieces of shellstone look exactly alike. The shell and fossil patterns give your deck character you just can’t copy with a manufactured product. It pairs especially well with coastal, tropical, and Old Florida-style homes.
Cons and how to manage them
Softer stone
How fragile is it, and does it chip?
Shellstone is softer than travertine. SWFL installers rate its durability as moderate and note that edges can chip or crack if they aren’t properly supported underneath. Some add that it may wear slightly over time in high-traffic areas.
How to manage it: installation matters a lot. Your contractor should make sure every piece, especially edges and corners, is fully supported by a solid base. Ask your installer which setting method fits your deck. Need an installer? Find one on our Find a Contractor page.
Porous
Shellstone soaks things up. Florida installers warn that, unsealed, it can stain from sunscreen, tannins from leaves, oils, and pool chemicals. The fix is sealing (more on that below).
Joint weeds and algae
How do you keep weeds and algae out of shellstone or travertine joints?
Weeds and green algae in the joints are a common complaint from homeowners with natural stone pool decks in our humid climate. A few things help:
- Talk joints over with your installer up front. Whether joints are filled (with grout or joint sand) or left open affects how much room there is for dirt and seeds to settle.
- Keep the deck clean. Regular sweeping and rinsing removes the dirt and organic debris that weeds and algae need.
- Skip acidic and harsh cleaners. Installers caution that acidic or abrasive cleaners can damage shellstone, and the same caution applies to travertine. Home remedies like vinegar are acidic, so avoid them. Use a cleaner labeled safe for natural stone.
If the problem keeps coming back, have a contractor look at your joints and drainage.
Shellstone vs travertine vs concrete pavers
Shellstone vs travertine: which is better?

Neither one wins across the board. It depends on what matters most to you. Here’s a side-by-side in plain terms, based on how Florida pool builders describe each material:
| Comparison | Shellstone | Travertine | Concrete pavers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look | Coastal, with visible shell and fossil; lots of variation | Classic, natural; more consistent than shellstone | Uniform color and size; many shapes |
| Comfort in sun | Builders describe it as comfortable underfoot | Builders also describe it as comfortable underfoot | Varies by color and finish; compare samples |
| Traction | Textured surface; confirm wet-area suitability for the exact finish and sealer | Texture varies by finish; confirm wet-area suitability | Varies by finish; compare samples |
| Durability | Softer; edges need full support | Harder and denser than shellstone | Manufactured for consistency |
| Maintenance | Needs regular sealing | Needs periodic sealing | Ask about sealing for your product |
| Relative cost | Typically higher than concrete pavers | Typically higher than concrete pavers | Typically lower than natural stone |

Shellstone coping: what to know

Can shellstone be used for coping?
Yes. Universal offers Shell Stone coping in 4x9, 4x9x4 and 12x24. Florida pool builders say shellstone coping needs clean cuts, solid support underneath, and enough thickness at the coping’s front edge (the nose). Thin, unsupported edges are a chipping risk.
Ask your contractor how they’ll support the nose. To see the coping Universal carries and learn how to choose a profile, read our pool coping replacement guide or visit our coping page.
Caring for a shellstone deck

How often do you seal shellstone?
If you use Seal-N-Lock Ultra Wet Look from Universal, it typically needs resealing every 2 to 3 years, depending on UV exposure and traffic wear. Your installer can tell you what makes sense for your deck.
Simple care routine:
- Sweep often to clear sand, leaves, and debris.
- Rinse the deck with water regularly.
- Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner made for natural stone. No acids, no harsh scrubbing.
- Reseal on schedule with a sealer made for natural stone.
Universal’s Ultra Wet Look can be used on suitable natural-stone surfaces. Natural stone may absorb sealer differently than concrete, so apply thin, even coats and avoid pooling. Confirm compatibility with your exact stone and test an inconspicuous area first. It adds a glossy wet look, so ask us about the finish you want and current instructions. Is shellstone right for your pool?
Shellstone may be a great fit if:
- You love a coastal, natural look with lots of character
- Traction around the pool is a top priority for your family
- You’re OK with sealing on a regular schedule
- You’ll hire an installer experienced with natural stone who supports every edge
You might lean toward travertine or concrete pavers if:
- You want a more consistent look from piece to piece
- You’d like a harder, denser stone, or a manufactured product
- You want to keep upkeep as simple as possible
