Paver shapes vs. laying patterns: what’s the difference?

People use “paver patterns” to mean two different things, and it helps to separate them before you shop.

The shape or set is the product we make. Atlas, Troy, Valencia, Olympia, Roma and Milano are the names of our paver shapes. Some are one size, some come as a two-piece combo, and some are three-piece sets made to be laid together.

The laying pattern is how your installer arranges those pieces on the ground. Common laying patterns include:

  • Running bond: rows of rectangles offset like a brick wall.
  • Herringbone: rectangles set in a zigzag at 45° or 90°. Your installer should confirm whether the layout is appropriate for your project.
  • Basketweave: pairs of pavers alternating direction, like a woven basket.
  • Random or mixed-size: several sizes arranged in a varied layout.

We make the shapes; your installer chooses the layout. Ask your installer which layout suits your pattern and space.

Single-size pavers: Atlas 4x8 and Troy 6x9

Single-size pavers are the simplest to plan: one piece, repeated. They work with classic layouts like running bond, herringbone and basketweave, and your installer can tell you which one fits your space.

4x8 pavers (Atlas)

Atlas is the classic brick size, 4x8 inches, with a beveled edge and flat surface. The bevel gives each paver a crisp outline, so the joints read as clean, even lines. If you picture a traditional brick-look driveway or walkway, this is the shape.

Our catalog shows Atlas in Charcoal, Crimson Tide, Coffee Brown, Scarlet and Smoke. Crimson Tide and Scarlet lean toward the warm red-brick look, while Charcoal and Smoke feel more modern.

6x9 pavers (Troy)

Troy is a larger rectangle, 6x9 inches, with a cobbled edge and flat surface. The softened, cobbled edge gives it a more relaxed, old-world look than Atlas, and the bigger piece means fewer joints across the same area.

Our catalog shows Troy in Charcoal and Coffee Brown. Coffee Brown in Troy is a warm, easygoing choice for a patio, and Charcoal in Troy gives a darker surface a softer edge.

Mixed-size pavers: Valencia’s 2-piece combo

Valencia pairs two sizes, 6x6 and 6x9, with a cobbled edge and flat surface. Mixing two sizes breaks up the long, straight lines you get with a single rectangle, so the surface feels more varied and a little more casual.

Valencia also has the widest color range in our catalog. It’s shown in Burnt Amber, Crimson Tide, Coffee Brown, Smoke, Ice Gray, Oasis, Sand Stone, Siesta and Sunset Blend. That range runs from pale white-and-tan blends to warm reds and browns.

If you’re searching for “mixed size pavers,” Valencia is the simplest place to start: two pieces, one look.

3-piece paver patterns: Olympia, Roma and Milano

A 3-piece paver pattern is a set of three sizes made to be laid together. The mix of sizes creates a random, flowing look, which suits patios, courtyards and other spaces where you want the paving to feel relaxed.

Olympia: 4x8, 8x8, 8x12, beveled edge, flat surface

Olympia combines a 4x8, an 8x8 and an 8x12 with a beveled edge and flat surface. The bevel keeps the lines crisp even with three sizes in play, so the result looks tailored. The 8x12 is the largest piece in our concrete range, which helps a big patio read calmer.

Roma: the same three sizes, a different finish

Roma uses the same three sizes as Olympia (4x8, 8x8 and 8x12) but with a straight edge and an embossed surface. Side by side, Olympia looks clean and smooth, while Roma’s embossed texture gives it more of a stone-like character. If you like Olympia’s layout but want more texture, Roma is the one to compare.

Our catalog shows Olympia and Roma in Smoke, Ice Gray, Oasis and Siesta.

Milano: 4x6, 6x6, 6x9, cobbled edge

Milano is a smaller-scale 3-piece set: 4x6, 6x6 and 6x9, with a cobbled edge and flat surface. The smaller pieces and soft edges give it a cozy, cobblestone feel that suits walkways and smaller spaces. Milano is on our website rather than in the printed catalog, and it comes in all 11 of our colors.

Paver sizes and thickness: 60 mm vs 80 mm

Our residential pavers are 60 mm (2 3/8 in) thick. That’s the thickness we make for driveways, patios and walkways around Tampa Bay homes.

For commercial projects, we make 80 mm pavers in the Atlas 4x8 pattern, and every color comes in 80 mm. All our other patterns are 60 mm. If you’re planning a plaza, entrance or other commercial space, see our commercial pavers page.

Thickness is only part of the picture. The base under the pavers matters just as much, and that’s your installer’s call. Your installer confirms the base and thickness for your job.

How many pallets do you need?

Coverage varies by pattern and packing unit; confirm the square feet per cube or pallet for your selected product before ordering. Here’s a simple way to get a first estimate:

  1. Measure the area. Multiply length by width for each section, then add the sections together.
  2. Subtract what won’t be paved. Take out planting beds, the pool opening and anything else inside the outline.
  3. Ask your installer about cuts. Curves, borders and odd angles all create cut pieces, so your installer will tell you how much extra to add.
  4. Divide by pallet coverage. Use the confirmed coverage for your exact pattern and packing unit, then round up to complete units.

Valencia, Olympia, Roma and Milano come as sets, so call us for coverage on mixed sets. Our paver and pallet guide walks through a full example.

When you’re ready, call (813) 884-0010. We’ll confirm coverage for your pattern and help you round to the right number of pallets.

Choosing a pattern for your project

There’s no single “best” paver pattern. It depends on the space and the look you want. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Driveways: single-size rectangles like Atlas 4x8 and Troy 6x9 are popular choices, and herringbone is a common driveway layout. Your installer decides the layout and base.
  • Patios: larger pieces like the 8x12 in Olympia and Roma read calmer across a big patio. Valencia’s mix keeps a smaller patio feeling relaxed.
  • Walkways and curves: small pieces, like those in Milano or Valencia, can be considered for curved layouts; ask your installer about cuts.
  • Pool decks: pick a color and edge you like, then finish the pool edge with our concrete bullnose coping, 4 x 9 x 2 3/8 in. See our pool coping guide for more.
  • Edge style: cobbled edges (Troy, Valencia, Milano) feel soft and traditional. Beveled edges (Atlas, Olympia) look crisp. Roma’s straight edge and embossed surface add texture.

Milano comes in every color, but not every color comes in every other pattern, so check the color page and confirm the combination with our team. Planning a patio? Read our patio pavers guide.
