Many buyers ask for "cinder block"; our range includes concrete masonry units (CMU). All six profiles are 8″ blocks, and each has its own product page and technical drawing. Your plans or your mason decide which profile goes where in the wall. If you're unsure, call (813) 884-0010 with your drawings or block schedule and we'll help you match the list to our products.
Block, mortar and sand can go on one quote. We carry Mason Cement Mix — Type S Mortar and Bulk washed masonry sand. Tell us how many blocks you are laying and confirm the mortar and sand quantities with your mason. Ask our team which product and safety documents are available for your order.

Each block in the size table links to its technical drawing (PDF), which shows the actual dimensions of that unit. For strength, ASTM or fire-rating questions, read our guide to CMU dimensions, strength and fire ratings. The short version: check the documents for the exact unit, and let your engineer or designer confirm it suits the project. Call (813) 884-0010 to ask what documentation is available for the block you're considering.

In the Tampa Bay area, Universal Hardscapes makes concrete block at its own Tampa plant and sells to contractors and builders. We make regular 8x8x16 block, bond beam, header, conduit and half block, with Type S mason cement mix and washed masonry sand from the same plant.
CMU stands for concrete masonry unit, the hollow concrete block used for walls, foundations and structures across Florida. People also call it concrete block, cement block or cinder block. Modern CMU is made from cement, sand and aggregate rather than cinders.
An 8-inch block is 7-5/8 inches wide (thick through the wall). Universal Hardscapes makes the 8-inch block series: regular, bond beam, header, conduit and half block.
The required unit size, strength, footing and reinforcement come from the project’s engineered plans. Universal supplies the 8-inch CMU series; confirm its suitability against those plans before ordering.
Regular, bond beam and header block (15-5/8 x 7-5/8 x 7-5/8 in): 72 blocks per pallet. Half block (7-5/8 x 7-5/8 x 7-5/8 in): 120 blocks per pallet.
About 1.125 standard 8x8x16 blocks per square foot of wall face, or 6.75 blocks per linear foot for a 6-foot wall. See How to Plan a Concrete Block Privacy Wall for a full table.

Concrete masonry units, often shortened to CMU, are building blocks used in wall assemblies. Choosing the right unit starts with the project drawings and the intended role of the finished wall.
A wall may be designed to carry loads, divide spaces or form part of an outdoor structure. Those roles do not make every block interchangeable. The designer’s specification should identify the unit, mortar, grout and reinforcement required for the particular assembly.
Universal’s concrete masonry blocks collection includes regular, half, bond beam, conduit and header units. Their different shapes support different details in a masonry layout. Match the product to the specified detail rather than selecting by appearance alone.
Retaining walls, foundations and commercial masonry each place different demands on a wall assembly. Use the design documents to define those demands before ordering blocks.
A retaining wall must be designed for its site conditions, including retained soil, water and any nearby loads. Do not use a standard wall block as a substitute for an engineered retaining-wall system without the designer’s approval.
Ask the project professional to confirm the foundation, reinforcement, drainage and construction details. There is no single wall height or reinforcement spacing that this article can safely prescribe for every project.
