Travertine vs Concrete Pavers for Tampa Bay Pool Decks

Choosing a pool-deck material starts with the exact product and your site. Travertine and concrete pavers offer different looks, but a material name alone does not answer questions about wet-surface use, barefoot comfort or upkeep. Compare samples, confirm suitability and review the complete installation with your contractor.

Ivory natural stone paving around a pool in a Universal installation

Start with the look you want

Travertine is natural stone. Its variation can be part of the appeal when you want a less uniform surface. Look at several pieces together and compare the range with your pool tile and coping. Universal’s travertine collection includes Ivory and Silver; confirm the finish and format for your selection.

Concrete pavers offer manufactured color and pattern choices. Ice Gray and Oasis are examples in Universal’s catalog. Compare the layout as well as the color: the size and arrangement of the units help define the finished deck. Review samples rather than treating a screen image as an exact color match.

Ask product specific comfort and safety questions

Do not rely on broad promises that travertine is always cool or that any paver is slip-proof. Ask what temperature and wet-use information is available for the exact product, finish and proposed sealer. Review samples in conditions representative of the project where practical. Samples help with selection; they do not replace technical suitability checks.

Discuss sun exposure, shaded areas and wet walking routes with your installer. Ask how drainage, transitions and the chosen surface treatment will be handled. If the pool uses a salt system, request product-specific compatibility and maintenance guidance before ordering.

Compare the care requirements

Travertine requires stone-appropriate care. Acidic cleaners can etch calcium-based stone; the Natural Stone Institute recommends mild, non-acidic cleaning products for these materials. Ask your supplier for care instructions for the selected stone and finish. Sealing decisions should also be product-specific; a sealer does not make stone stain-proof.

For concrete pavers, request the manufacturer’s cleaning and sealing guidance. Inspect the surface and joints as part of ongoing maintenance, and ask your installer about any movement, ponding or joint-material loss. Choose a maintenance plan you can realistically follow rather than assuming either material needs no attention.

Compare complete project quotations

Ask for comparable scopes: deck area, product and format, coping, borders, site preparation, installation, waste allowance and any planned surface treatment. Confirm packing, freight or collection arrangements, and other applicable charges with the supplier. A price for one material alone cannot establish the total project cost.

Neither material is automatically the better choice for every Tampa Bay pool. Make the decision from the look you prefer, verified product suitability, care requirements and the complete quotation.

Choose your next step

Homeowners: Shortlist one travertine and one concrete option, then contact Universal about samples and product details. Ask about independent installer referrals if needed.

Contractors: Send the chosen products, formats, coping requirements and measured area for a material inquiry. Use our paver and pallet calculation guide to prepare quantities, then confirm the final packing and order details with the team.
