CMU Dimensions, Strength and Fire Ratings: What to Verify

A block drawing can answer a size question. It cannot, by itself, establish the strength or fire rating of a finished wall. Keep product identification and assembly performance separate when reviewing specifications.

Dimensioned drawing of a Universal bond beam block

Nominal size and actual dimensions

Nominal descriptions do not establish exact outer dimensions. The published concrete block size table lists actual dimensions from Universal’s current product drawings. Use the drawing for the selected unit and the project’s masonry layout when checking fit.

Regular blocks, half blocks, bond beam units and header units serve different details. Browse the concrete masonry blocks collection and confirm the exact item rather than assuming all products with an 8-inch description are interchangeable.

Strength requires a documented specification

Request the relevant product documentation and compare it with the designer’s requirements. A general strength number taken from a blog is not a substitute for a test report or the project specification.

Do not assume every unit is load-bearing or that a wall’s capacity can be established from unit strength alone. Reinforcement, grout, mortar and the complete design also need review by the project professional.

Fire ratings belong to a supported assembly

Ask for the documentation applicable to the proposed wall assembly. Do not assign a two-, three- or four-hour rating based only on a block’s name, size or appearance.

The designer and relevant reviewing authority should determine whether the supporting evidence meets the project requirements. This guide does not promise a fire rating, code approval or a particular test certificate for Universal’s current inventory.

Make the document request specific

Send Universal the product names, required quantities and specification references. Ask which dimensional drawings and technical records can be supplied for those exact products. Confirm availability before placing an order.

For a broader introduction, read Understanding Concrete Masonry Units for Florida Construction. Use product resources for catalog references and contact the team when a required field is not published.

For general background, the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association explains how unit dimensions and properties relate to specification. Use its guidance alongside the documentation required for your project.
